Hebrews 12:1-3

Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we'd better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we're in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he's there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!

Rehab here I come!

Good News ... I am heading to rehab tomorrow. There is so many unknowns at this point and Im exciteded but anxious at the same time. Please be praying that my actual trip there will go well, for my room (would love a private room but will take what I can get) and for the people that will be working with me. I'm expecting that it will be a lot of hard work but I'm up for the challenge. God is good and I know He is going before me and preparing the way. Thanks to all of you for praying and for your continued prayers. I love you all. Hugs Sandra

Mike Heading back to work

Well it's time, I'll be heading to work today for a few hours and sort through the paper work and see where we are at. It's difficult wanting to be in 2 places at once but I will see her for lunch.

Transfers going well

Sandra did 4 transfers this morning from the bed to her chair. This is a big deal and the therapists are very impressed. It is difficult to watch her struggle but also exciting to see progress. Sandra still works daily on her trunk (core) strength as we realize that this is a critical strength she will need. The goals are still to get to rehab ASAP and to have her neck brace off for Julia's grade 8 graduation. I was going to put going to grad as a goal but she informed me that I didn't have to because it was happening no matter what. Mike

Wanting back to normal

Sandra's status physically has been fairly similar, sensitivities are about the same. It is difficult on the parenting side, as much as our kids are loved by friends and family it's not the same as home. We just want Sandra home but we have to be patient for the right time. We want to give them everything and protect them, but as we found out we aren't in control This is a season of life but sometimes it feels a little too much like winter and we are ready for Summer. 2 weeks in

In some ways I can't believe we are 2 weeks in and in other ways I can't believe it's only been 2 weeks. Sandra is getting stronger, more comfortable every day. She takes some pain medication but a fairly small amount. The kids were on a youth retreat with the church so it was nice not to have to make plans for them but we are eagerly waiting their return tonight. We continue to pray for healing and Sandra to make a full recovery but are content with what God gives us and are happy for what we still have. Mike

Great day!

Well.... I have had some great days. I typically wake up at 5am just because that's what my body is use to. I try my best to make my self look half descent so I don't scare the doctors when they come in for rounds at 8am. Breakfast, than off to physio where I have been making some progress. Mike has dropped the girls off and is normally here to help and learn how to do the excersises with me. Time for a nap! Than I am back in my chair to go outside and enjoy some sunshine and lunch. To avoid bed sores I am trying to move every two hours so I am back into my bed and resting up for you my friends and family to come and visit. I love seeing all of your smiling faces. Dinner and some more visiting than its time to get ready for bed. I am so thankful for each and every one of you that have come to visit, send flowers, cards, texts, emails, comments on the blog, lunches, your encouraging words. I thank God for each and every one of you. Psalm 9:1-2 I will praise You, O Lord with my whole heart, I will tell of all Your marvelous works. I will be glad and rejoice in You, I will sing praise to Your name, O most high. Thanks for all your love and support and for the encouragement you bring me. HUGS Sandra

Amazing People

It has been ride but not without meeting some amazing people on the way. My doctors, nurses,PCA (peresonal care assistants)and physiotherapist have all been amazing. One of my PCA Molly is incredible she is from africa and has 2 set of twins 20 and 16 and 12 year old. She is a single mom who works 2 shifts in a row in order to provide for her family. She is always happy with a beautiful smile that lights up the room when she walks in. If I could take her home I would. She says that she is always thankful to God and that she try's to always give the glory to him no matter what because He takes care His children. I could go on with all the amazing people I have met, I am so grateful that God has placed them in my life and that I have had this opportunity to meet them. Please be praying for all these amazing people and that if they don't know Him that I would have the opportunity to share with them the love and grace of God. Sandra

Ooops

Hmmmm, I seam to have lost my touch, not sure what happened to the last post. Sandra got to the gym yesterday and did some transfers. Her physio people are very impressed with her progress. She is physically and mentally eager and ready to get to rehab. We were told yesterday that it could still be a week or two. Please pray for an opening because this trauma ward as nice as it is, is getting old. We do see all kinds here and when we look around still thankful for her progress. We have some police presence and her neighbor is cuffed to the bed which gives me a little entertainment. Another prayer request is for Sandra to continue to be free of bed sores. Aparently they are a huge set back and take weeks to recover from. Mike

Happy Saturday!!

Good Morning,

Praise item

Well Sandra gets tests several times a day. One is called the prick test, basically they start at the top and go all the way to the bottom with a pin and see where there is sensations. Initially it was chest down none or very little sensation but as of this morning it appears to be belly button down. Praise God for all little steps "pardon the pun". Mike

Sandra's condition

Well it has come to my attention I have never posted on Sandra's exterior condition, meaning road rash. The quick answer is she has none. Not a scratch, burn nothing. She had a manicure days before the accident and she didn't even break a nail. She had a small bruise on her chin the size of a dime and her left knee was bruised but the rest on the exterior is 100%. We are very thankful for that. Of note to our motorcycle buddies, the sergeon measured her head and helmet and said she had a perfect fit and the right brand of helmet. He said " if it was an HJC helmet she would have broke her c2 and possibly had head trauma" The one time I'm thankful my wife picks from the top shelf. Mike

Transferred without the lift

Physio went well, Sandra transferred to her chair without the lift. Her upper body stength is great and this is helping her alot. The Mulders are starting to get into a new routine which is great. I take the girls to school in the morning and call Sandra from the car. After the drop off I go straight to the civic hospital and spend the day with Sandra, watching and (trying to help). The girls come most days and we try to have dinner together which feels a little more normal then sitting in her room. Please pray that a room at the rehab will open up, continued great spirits and continued healing Talk to you soon Mike

Tuff morning but good afternoon

Well we had a tuff morning. I think the hardest part is the unknown for all 4 of us. Sandra and I are planners and like to know the road ahead. We have our 5 year plans etc.... all laid out but we have been thrown a curve. The night of the accident I prayed to the Lord that this won't be life changing, well even if Sandra walks tomorrow it is still certainly life changing for our families and those who have been touched by our lives and this blog. My Aunt shared a song, an oldie but a goodie. Because he lives I can face tomorrow, because he lives all fear is gone, because I know he holds the future and life is worth a living just because he lives. Mike

You are Mine

Isaiah 43:1 "Fear not, for I have redeemed you, I have called you by your name; you are Mine" there is a lot of unknowns and I've started to think what are the next few weeks, months going to look like, but than God reminds me Sandra be still (which isn't to hard, but hard for my brain) praying for patience! I want to get to rehab and start working to see what can be accomplished. The amazing thing is that God already knows and I just need to be still in the moment and trust. I am His and He is Mine...... Its in His time not mine. Everyday I get stronger and I am able to do more which I am grateful for. The doctors, nurses and physiotherapists are amazed at how well I am doing and encourage me to keep it up. Have to say I might be a little stubborn or driven, not sure but if they tell me half an hour oh I'm doing an hour what ever it takes. Please continue to pray for Julia and Emily. They are doing better everyday but there are going to be some tuff days ahead. I have a goal to have my neck brace off by Julia's grad and I would love to be able to do a few mom and daughter things with her. I am truly grateful for the family and friends that have taken my girls under the wing, loved them and made there days as normal as they can be. It's a blessing that I am so thankful for. Pray for Mike aka My Rock. He is amazing and has just taken over everything. I don't have to worry about a thing. He has been s strong and supportive through all of this. Days will come that will be more difficult and I just pray that he will keep leaning on the Lord for support. Romans 5:3-4 "and not only that, but we also glory in tribulations , knowing that tribulations produces perseverance and perseverance, character and character hope." So I am perseving it's a ride I don't want to miss. I love you all ... Thank you for All that you do. It's always exciting to see how many people have checked this blog it's amazing, I think we are up to 20,000 plus. It's crazy! HUGS Sandra

Physio went well

Sandra had physio this afternoon and did some leg stretches and extensions. The therapist is very happy with her progress. She also was given some weights to maintain her upper body strength. Mike

Sorry for the delay

Well had a good holiday Monday. Sandra actually fell asleep in her chair which I take as she is getting more comfortable. The Dr. 's found another injury, she has a chipped rt ankle that is in place so it just has to heal now. On the bright side she doesn't feel it so it isn't uncomfortable for her We ordered in some Lone last night and ate it with the kids and some friends. It felt like a normal get together. Sandra sat onthe side of her bed today for 15min which was huge. She is ready for rehab once a bed gets ready for her. Please continue to pray for progress and I will update later Thanks Mike

What a Week!!

Wow what a week, I sometimes have a hard time wrapping my head around all that has happened and what the future looks like. In summary Sandra's spinal cord was not severed but it was damaged and now swollen. At this point we don't know, nor the Doctors know how much paralysis is from swelling and how much is from damage. We continue to pray and work towards a full recovery but are satisfied with what ever out come HE chooses for us.
The constant question Sandra and I get is how can we be so positive in such a dark situation. My simple answer is I know God is in control I am his and he is mine. He has a plan for our life and as Romans 8:28 says, "and We know that in all things God works for good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. This life and bodies that we have are temporary, if God uses this to touch one life then it is a small price to pay in regards to eternity. God has already worked in me, I'm a different man then I was 1 week ago and the journey has just begun.
If you don't have this comfort and peace I would encourage you to seek it out. It is available to all who put their faith in the creator and sustainer of life. If you don't have someone in your life who knows this peace then please post a comment with your contact info, I won't put it live online. Since this has become a global blog I know I can find someone in your area that can share this with you and answer any questions you may have

Beautiful Moments...Beautiful Mercy...Beautiful Buddy

It was already humid early this morning as I made my way to the hospital.  As I walked in the quiet morning, I prayed.  Prayed for my sweet sister...mostly for healing but also that her day would be good, and that our time together would be sweet.  It was so sweet.  I had the privilege of sharing the morning with my baby sister.  Just her and I and sweet visits from Jesus.  He takes so many forms.  A lovely Christian nurse who came to thank Sandra for her strong witness in the trauma unit. "the sun is pouring into your room here," she said, "but that is not the only light in this room".  She shared a verse with Sandra from Job 8:21 "He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy."  Sandra immediately got out her Bible to see what else that chapter had to say.  She looks for God in every moment of her day and He most definitely has filled her with laughter.  As we share our usual sisterly banter she reaches for her neck brace and hangs on while her body shakes with laughter and I try my best not to let the tears form.  Tears of joy that I may share this very moment with my precious sister.  Later Jesus shows himself in a dear sister in the Lord who sits beside Sandra at lunch, holds her hand and excitedly shares with her what God has been teaching her through Sandra's journey.  Many more sweet moments come an go through the day, but I am struck by the sense that God is in it all and as promised He has not forsaken any of us.
We are overwhelmed as a family at the way we can sense the many prayers on all of our behalves.  A colleague who has become a friend to both my sister and I, shares his specific prayer items for Sandra, myself and our entire family...he has everyone he knows praying and knows that they will not stop for a long time.  Close friends of mine and Terry provide a meal and a beautiful retreat for the evening and we are loved an refreshed.
Come back to Friday for just a moment with me. Sandra's and my children, who attend the same school had their track and field day.  Near the end of the day the grade one's had there 400 meter run.  I was moved to tears as the last little fellow struggled to complete his race, his teacher Rachel deHann runs beside him on the inside of the track, cheering and encouraging, him with every little step he takes.  I felt it was a beautiful reminder of how God is running this race with us.  Even though some of this journey can be painful, He continues to run along side of us reminding us that we are not alone, that He believes in us, and that He will provide the strength we need to complete it.  Not only that, we are surrounded by an amazing cheering section of people who are praying for and supporting our family.
I know that my sister's goal is to honour and praise God with each moment of her life and to live out Philippians 3:12-14  She is well on her way.
I am personally so thankful for the mercies we see each day.  That I can have a day with my "Buddy" and still giggle with her at things only she and I understand because her memories are in tact is no small mercy....neither is being able to feel her arms around me.  Praise God that His mercies are new every morning!!!
Part of our day included a bit of a spa treatment...after her hair was done we took this picture of my gorgeous sister. ~cb
Hello All!!  Thanks for praying for me!!

Beautiful lunch

Well we had a beautiful lunch with the girls, some friends and family. It almost felt normal just sitting around and chatting. Sandra's core strength continues to get better, she can pull herself forward to adjust in herself in bed and her chair. These are early big steps that we are told she is well ahead of schedule( very exciting). Bumps, bruises and swelling continue to appear. She had an x-ray today of her rt ankle because of the swelling, they just want to make sure 100% that there is no damage. Please pray for continued strength and the swelling to go down in her legs and ankles. For those that remember they look like when she was pregnant with Julia The Persad's(from Sarnia) stopped in for a visit and it was great to catch up again with them. Sandra got outside and probably spent 3.5-4 hours total in her chair today ( yes this is a big deal) Mike

Sunrise

Good Morning to everyone. I have just woken up. I had a great evening, it's amazing how a shower will make you feel, rejuvenated, energized and ready to take on anything. As I was getting ready for bed I was reading my bible and the air ambulance came in, I've been praying for the patient's that having been coming, that they know or will have the opportunity to know my saviour. God has given me such a peace about my situation. He has promised me never to leave me nor forsake me. John 14:23 God was talking to His disciples, If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. God promised that if we accept and have a relationship with him His Holy Spirit will actually enter our hearts, settle and be at home. It's my favorite promise because I never have to do anything alone my heavenly Father is always with me. So its my prayer that these patients and anyone that I come in contact with will have that peace. I am amazed and overwhelmed with the pour out of love, support and prayers that we are recieving. God is good. Julia and Emily have been so well taken care of. Mike and I have been blessed with a abundance of amazing family and friends, it allows Mike to be able to come and be with me here and for us not worry about how they are doing. (They just might not want to come back) Julia has been tired and concerned but starting to deal with what is happening. Emily is just wanting her Mommy back at home. I look forward to being able to snuggle with her again. I miss that! I am so thankful and blessed to have my mind and my arms to be able touch and hug each and everyone of you. You all have a special place in my heart and I can't imagine going through anything in life with out my God and the support of my brothers and sisters in Christ. THANK YOU! I am His and He is mine. What a peace. I love you all and look forward to seeing each and everyone of you. Please be praying for my contnuied strenghth, energy, healing. Pray for Julia and Emily, in the months to come as they are going to be difficult and very different summer than what they have been looking forward to. Continue to pray for Mike, my rock. He has been amazing thought this all. With a thankful heart, Sandra

Doing well

Well it has been a good day,her spirits are still good The drowsiness of the surgey has lifted and she is bright and alert again I am cautiously saying visitors are welcome, but am a little concerned of being overwhelmed. We will have to adhere to the visitation rules of 3-8 since she will be with the dr's and physio people all morning Thankyou for all your prayers and overwhelming support Mike

Emily is 12 today

Just a little birthday wish for Emily born at I think 8:42 this morning 12 years ago. She lights up our home and hearts Love dad

Early starts

Well each morning since the accident I have woken up at 5am (give or take within 5min). Sometimes thinking its the devil but more recently I know it has to be God. This has been a time to take care of myself both spiritually, physically to prepare for the day. Sitting on Sandra's night table is a wedding picture of me carrying her like you would through the threshold and the stark reality I will have to do that again but I'm not that fit 22 year old anymore. Sandra has done her part in the fitness department so  pray for me to be dilligent and do my part in these early morning. Since I know you are praying for my family already if you could pray for Julia to continue to be dilligent in her knee rehab as she is 90% there and needs to keep focused to get full mobility. For those who don't know she had acl,mcl and meniscus tear in February Mike

Met with surgeon

Met with Dr Agbi this afternoon, he is the surgeon who did the work on Sandra. He was happy with the results, even though it was long and complicated. He confirmed that Sandra would have to wear her neck brace for 6 weeks at that time she will have a follow up with him. Please continue to pray for strength, balance and stamina as physio is very exhausting for her but she is determined to push through. Also for continued progress, and the swelling will go down so she can work towards a complete recovery. We see miracles daily as she is on the road to recovery!! Mike

Sat by herself for 5 minutes

She had a busy day today, between the getting in the wheel chair and sitting at the side of her bed Every test has been better then the previous test which we are thankful for All of her iv's are removed so she isn't "hooked up" anymore The short term plan is to be here in trauma for 1 more week then get moved to rehab for who knows how long. At some point during rehab Sandra will get day passes to get home More news later Mike

Got in the wheel chair

Well she did it, they thought is she did 1/2 hour in her chair would be good She stayed in it 1 hour and 45 min.and did great. Very exciting!! It should be no problem for our 1st goal of getting outside this weekend

ThInking back to 18 months ago

I was just thinking back to 18 months ago, Sandra and Dr Kamel made a friendly wager for who can lose the most body fat over 1year. Sorry Dr K to post this but she blew you away. Note to all don't mess with Sandra's competative side. Through all of this she lost 75lbs and now has some "guns". I can only think that this was a Huge step in her recovery that started 18 months ago. Heading to the hospital soon and will update how the new wheels go Mike

Thursday, May 17, 2012

A great day!!

Well here I sit beside my wife who is sitting up comfortable and alert the effects of the surgey fading Sandra had some light touch sensations in her legs and feet. We are not sure what this means but we are taking it as a positive. Please be in prayer for trunk strength as this will help if her ability to moneuver into a wheelchair which is her goal tomorrow. Pain is being managed, care is great I recommend the civic trauma unit to anyone lol except for dinner Thank you again for all you prayers, more updates tomorrow when Sandra gets her new set of wheels Mike

Moved rooms

Having a good day, moved to a private room( next door to the old one) Sandra's spirits continue to be great, pain is under control and she has her appetite back Mike

Celebrating My Brother & Sister

May 16, 1992....it was a beautiful spring day full of promise and hope.  My sister was breathtaking in her Bridal gown as she gracefully made her way down the aisle to say "I do" to her best friend and man of her dreams.  As is typical of Sandra, the day went off without a hitch and a good time was had by all.
Isn't it funny how life is never like our best day....there are many "hitches" in life and yet God, if we allow Him is in the midst all of our days.
Many of you have known Sandra and Mike for a long time and many for just a few years, but all of you know the depth of love and devotion they have for each other and the way they have chosen to raise their girls.  They are a living testament to our LORD and saviour.  They do so much with such ease, but the bottom line for them at the end of each day is knowing that they have honoured God and been a light to all who come in contact with them.  It's no secrect how they do this.
Deuteronomy 11:20 says: "Place these words on your hearts. Get them deep inside you. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder. Teach them to your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning until you fall into bed at night. Inscribe them on the doorposts and gates of your cities so that you'll live a long time, and your children with you, on the soil that God promised to give your ancestors for as long as there is a sky over the Earth."

A verse you will see displayed on a door frame as declaration in my sister and her husband's home is, Joshua 25:15 " But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

We want to celebrate the reason Mike and Sandra have the privilege of celebrating 20 years as Husband and Wife.  They have chosen to make God the very core of their marriage and their lives as individuals.  Make no mistake.  He is their very source.  I admire and respect them deeply.
As they face the future together, I am sure this isn't where they thought they would be on their 20th anniversary but I also know they rest in the assurance that God is still in the midst of this and He will carry them through.
Any of us who are married know that what we dreamed on our wedding day has often been different from what life became...life is a dance and sometimes it's through a mine field.  I know that for a time Mike may be my sister's legs...but they will continue this beautiful dance together...stronger than ever.
Happy Anniversary Mike and Sandra....we all love you.

Back in her room

Well she is back and I'm with her. It appears all went well but that is my opinion not the Dr's Please pray the her stomach can settle so she can rest She looks great, I was just chatting with a buddy and he asked how I was doing, my answer I have the peace of Christ No nervousness, and anxiety. Just ready to go through Gods plans for our family. My John 16:33 verse I saved from a sermon this summer from Brad Moffitt in my phone. I thought at the time I might need to share this with someone one day, little did I know it was going to be for me Have a great evening(morning) Carla added an email notifaction at the bottom of this page Mike
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
